Rick and Sue Simonsen began missionary service in Kenya in 1988, serving with Grace Independent Baptist Mission. They came to Kenya to work with Grace Baptist Bible College in Nairobi. They served at GBBC as instructor and administrator from 1991-1997. They have been actively church planting since completing their Swahili language study in 1989. Dr. Simonsen planted a church in the Eastlands area of Nairobi. The Simonsens then spent two years assisting in the planting of Christ’s Independent Baptist Church in a Nairobi suburb called Lucky Summer. Later, he assumed the work from another missionary who was leaving the country and shepherded a Baptist church in Lavington, on the west side of Nairobi.
In 1997, the Simonsens joined Baptist World Mission and continued their ministry. They moved to Thika and planted the Jumapili Baptist Church, which is now pastored by a national. Rick was an instructor for a number of years at Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute and the administrator of Independent Baptist Graduate Bible Institute. In 2009, those institutions merged to form Independent Baptist College of Ministry, where Dr. Simonsen is the Dean of Academics. In 2011, they began assisting a national pastor in the planting of Open Bible Baptist Church east of Thika. Please pray for the Simonsens!
